What Is a Finned Tubular Heater

A JIEO finned tubular heating element is a metal-sheathed electric heating element designed primarily for heating air and compatible, non-corrosive gases. It uses a tubular heating element with a resistance wire electrically insulated by compacted MgO, with metal fins added to the outer sheath to increase the heat-transfer surface. Fin material, size, spacing, and construction are selected according to the required airflow, temperature, and installation conditions.

JIEO finned surface increases tubular heating element contact with the surrounding air, allowing natural convection or forced airflow to carry heat away more effectively. This improves convective heat transfer, supports a lower sheath temperature at comparable loading, and allows more heating capacity to be arranged within limited duct or equipment space.

JIEO Finned tubular heaters are commonly used for forced-air heating, natural-convection heating, industrial process air heating, HVAC ducts, ovens, dryers, and other air-heating equipment.

JIEO Finned Tubular Heaters: More Surface Area for Better Air Heat Transfer

JIEO designs the finned section around the actual air-heating requirement rather than using one fixed fin design. Circular stainless-steel fins can be produced with an outside diameter starting from 12 mm, while larger diameters and fin spacing can be customized according to the tube diameter, airflow, and required heat-transfer area.

Square plate fins are also available to match rectangular frames, ducts, and other equipment layouts. With correctly matched airflow and watt density, you get more stable air-heating performance and reduce the risk of premature heater replacement caused by excessive sheath temperature.

The fins are securely welded to the tubular element to maintain firm thermal contact during repeated heating and cooling. This enlarged surface area transfers heat into the surrounding air more effectively, helping your equipment meet the required air-heating output without relying on an unnecessarily high element temperature.

JIEO Controlled Finned Tubular Heater Forming for Compact Air-Heating Layouts

JIEO manufactures finned tubular heaters in straight, U-, W-, and S-shaped configurations to suit different installation spaces and heating layouts. For a Ø9.5 mm tubular element, JIEO can form bends down to approximately R14 mm, allowing a greater effective heating length and finned surface area within a limited space.

Bend radius, leg spacing, overall dimensions, and fin positions are controlled to match the required heater layout, ensuring the formed element fits the equipment while maintaining the integrity of the tubular sheath and internal insulation through the bends.

This allows you to fit a longer effective heating section into your available space and install the finished heater with fewer layout changes or on-site adjustments.

JIEO Matches Heater Materials to Your Operating Environment

For a stainless steel finned tubular heating element, JIEO selects the sheath, fin material, and terminal sealing as a complete combination rather than using a single standard construction for every finned tubular heater. Steel-fin constructions are available with material temperature ratings up to about 400°C (750°F), while stainless-steel fin constructions with stainless or Incoloy sheaths can be configured for material temperatures up to about 650°C (1200°F).

For general humid conditions, SS304 or SS316L with stainless-steel fins and moisture-sealed terminals can be used to improve protection against moisture. More demanding environments are reviewed by JIEO engineers before the final material combination is confirmed.

Finned Tubular Air Heating Elements for Industrial Applications

Finned Tubular Duct Heaters for HVAC Air Heating

For duct air heating, JIEO can arrange straight or U-shaped finned tubular elements across the airflow. Fin spacing is matched to the available airflow, while threaded fittings or mounting plates secure the elements through the duct wall. Stainless-steel construction and moisture-sealed terminals are available for humid air conditions.

Industrial Ovens and Recirculating Cabinets

Where installation space is limited, U-, W-, or S-shaped elements can place more heated length inside the oven or in the recirculating air path. Heater shape, leg spacing, and fin position are adjusted to the cabinet dimensions, with terminal sections kept away from the hottest air zone where possible.

Dryers and Curing Equipment

For continuous drying or curing lines, multiple straight or U-shaped heaters can be arranged as a heater bank across the moving air. JIEO adjusts the heated length, fin spacing, and watt density to distribute the required heat across the airflow rather than concentrating it on a short element.

Heat Treating and Annealing Air Systems

Higher-temperature process air requires evaluating the sheath material, fin material, watt density, and airflow together. JIEO can combine stainless-steel fins with stainless-steel or Alloy 800 sheaths, selecting the final material combination based on the required outlet-air temperature and allowable sheath temperature. This helps keep the element temperature within its design limit during continuous air heating.

JIEO Finned Tubular Heater Construction

A JIEO finned tubular heater uses the same core construction as a tubular heating element, with metal fins added around the sheath to increase the heat-transfer surface area for air heating. The performance of the finished heater therefore starts with the quality of the tubular core — including the resistance wire, compacted MgO insulation, sheath material, forming, and terminal construction.

JIEO first controls these base heater specifications, then matches the fin material, size, spacing, and form to the required air-heating application. This gives you a finned tubular heater matched to your airflow and temperature requirements, helping you maintain stable operation and reduce premature replacements caused by unsuitable materials or fin configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ask JIEO Engineers

A finned tubular heater encloses the resistance wire inside an insulated metal sheath, making it safer and better protected for industrial air heating. An open-coil heater uses exposed resistance wire, so it requires more protection from accidental contact, dust, and other contaminants.

Higher airflow carries heat away from the fins faster, so the heater can generally operate at a higher watt density. With low airflow or a high target outlet temperature, JIEO normally uses a lower watt density or increases the heated length and finned surface instead of simply adding more wattage to the same heater size, helping prevent the element from running too hot.

Yes. For general humid conditions, SS304 or SS316L sheaths with stainless-steel fins and moisture-sealed terminals are commonly used. For more demanding outdoor or corrosive environments, contact a JIEO engineer to confirm the sheath material, sealing, and terminal protection.

Price is mainly affected by the material, heater dimensions, fin and mounting requirements, electrical termination, and order quantity. Standard straight, U- and W-shaped finned tubular heaters are typically produced within 7–15 days. For large-volume or stocking orders, JIEO can arrange batch production and staged deliveries according to the required schedule.

If the heater is energized but fails to reach the target temperature, check the wiring first and confirm that all heating sections are functioning. One tubular element may have an open or burned resistance wire, reducing the total heating output. If there is no heat at all, check the power supply, wiring connections, fuse, and controller before replacing the heater.

Keep sufficient clearance around the fins for airflow, support the heater at the mounting points, and avoid blocking the heated surface. Terminals and lead connections should be positioned away from the hottest airflow whenever possible.
